God’s Endless Mercy
“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end” (Lamentations 3:21-22).

Mercy has been defined to me as “not getting what you deserve.”
Our actions have consequences. And, friend, our sin deserves death.
Sometimes we might try to justify or minimize our sin. Our gossip? We were simply speaking truth. Our out-of-control spending? We deserve nice things.
But the truth is, we place self and pleasure and a hundred other things above our God and then worship that which is not worthy.
And yet, He is patient with us. Steadfast, faithful, and overflowing with a love beyond comprehension.
Yes, sometimes, we have a hand in the hard things we face. Poor decisions, misaligned priorities, and even willful disobedience result in disappointment, hurt, and painful consequences. And sometimes, through no fault of our own, we are simply experiencing the reality of living in a sinful world or caught up in the price of the sin of another.
Wherever we find ourselves, though, what comfort it brings to know that God is merciful! And not just merciful once, but abounding in mercy so that each day it is poured fresh upon us.
So when you find yourself dealing with the unpleasant consequences of …
your own choices,
life in a sinful world,
or the repercussions resulting from another person’s sin,
here are some verses you can cling to that tell us of God’s amazing mercy:
- Isaiah 30:18a: “Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you.”
- Exodus 34:6: “The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”
- Hebrews 4:16: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
What are your favorite verses that anchor you to God’s mercy?
Until next time,
Shelby
